Bridge Restoration Might Be Needed to Replace a Knocked-Out Tooth

Posted .

Avulsion is a dental term used to describe a tooth that has been knocked out of its socket. What usually happens is that the tooth suffers a partial avulsion where some of the root and other structures of the tooth remain in the socket. This almost always results in the total death of the tooth. Our dentists’ only viable course of treatment is to wholly extract the remnants of the tooth from the socket.

When you are ready, your dentists can help you understand your options for replacing the tooth. One of the most common methods is to simply install a dental bridge. This is essentially an artificial tooth that is fused to a pair of crowns on each end. It is anchored on abutments that are formed from the neighboring teeth.

Creating these abutments involves using a drill to remove most of the enamel from each tooth. This leaves behind a post-like core of dentin that surrounds the healthy pulp and root of each tooth.

Then our dentists will cast an impression of the abutments as well as the void and your personal bite pattern. This will be sent to a dental lab where your new bridge will be made. At the end of the appointment, temporary crowns will be cemented over each abutment to protect them.

A member of our team will call you back in for a brief, second appointment when your new bridge is ready. The temporary crowns will be removed and your bridge will be cemented onto the abutments.

If you’ve had a tooth knocked out, you shouldn’t hesitate to call First Dental of Bluffton at 843-757-2828 to seek treatment and timely restoration with a dental bridge in Bluffton, South Carolina.
